Malah, kesemua 18 peserta dari United Kingdom, New Zealand dan beberapa negara asing itu langsung tidak berani mendekati buah berduri itu, apatah lagi untuk merasa isinya.

Sekretariat pertandingan, Akbarudin Nasurdin berkata, dia tidak menyangka ‘kejadian’ itu akan berlaku kerana pertandingan serupa pernah diadakan semasa pameran buah-buahan di Komtar.

‘‘Masa itu memang ada pelancong asing yang ambil bahagian. Walaupun tak tahan dengan bau, mereka tetap menyertai pertandingan tersebut tapi kali ini usah kata nak masuk pertandingan, kami nak bagi rasa pun tak berani mencuba,” ujarnya.

Beliau yang juga Ketua Bahagian Promosi, Hal Ehwal Korporat, Teknologi Maklumat dan Komunikasi (ICT) serta Buah Lembaga Pemasaran Pertanian Persekutuan (FAMA) berkata, kesemua pelancong tersebut dijemput oleh pegawai Persatuan Agensi Pengembaraan dan Pelancongan Malaysia (MATTA) menyertai pertandingan itu.

Menurutnya, kesemua mereka pada mulanya tidak keberatan untuk menyertai pertandingan tersebut, tetapi mengubah fikiran sebaik sahaja tiba di tempat acara itu diadakan.

Tambahnya, walaupun pelancong-pelancong terbabit tidak memberi alasan sebenar mereka enggan menyertai pertandingan tersebut, namun bau durian yang terlalu menyengat hidung dipercayai menjadi punca utama para peserta mengubah fikiran.

Pesta durian itu diadakan sempena Pesta Makanan dan Buah-Buahan Pulau Pinang yang turut mempertandingkan buah durian terbaik.

Johan kategori durian terbaik dimenangi oleh durian jenis D14 milik Yeoh Hoi Chooi dari Balik Pulau yang membawa pulang hadiah wang tunai RM1,000, sijil penyertaan dan piala.

Naib johan dimenangi oleh Phang Kim Hong dari Balik Pulau yang turut mempertandingkan buah durian D14 manakala durian jenis ‘Duri Hitam’ milik Ooi Chieng Sim dari Teluk Bahang mendapat tempat ketiga.

Naib johan membawa pulang wang tunai RM700 sementara tempat ketiga RM500 di samping sijil penyertaan.

Sementara itu, durian jenis Hor Lor atau Labu Air milik Tan Chong Bin dari Balik Pulau dinobatkan sebagai ‘Juara antara Juara’ dan membawa pulang wang tunai RM1,000, sijil penyertaan dan piala.

Pesta durian itu dianjurkan bersama Jabatan Pertanian, FAMA dan Pihak Berkuasa Pekebun Kecil Perusahaan Getah (RISDA) negeri Pulau Pinang.

Dads: Do you have to be at your baby's birth?

These days, it's more unusual if he isn't there. For many couples, being together is what feels right. "I can't possibly imagine I could have been anywhere else when Poppy was born," says Steve, a father of two from Devon. "It was an amazing privilege, something you'd never forget, something you feel you wouldn't have missed for anything." But not everyone feels the same. Stella, who's 38 and pregnant with her third child, knows her partner Andy, 41, isn't particularly keen on attending another birth, and has decided to ask her sister to be there. This takes the pressure off Andy so he can decide on the day whether or not to attend. "I was at the births of my son and daughter, but to be honest I felt a bit of a spare part," says Andy. "I didn't feel it was any easier for Stella that I was around and in some ways I think it was harder, especially afterwards when she was being stitched - she felt so exposed and wasn't happy with me being there. These days there's this feeling that you're not a decent bloke if you're not at the delivery but that doesn't seem fair - it's an individual thing and it doesn't suit every couple." Talk about what you want It's important to talk together as a couple about your expectations of the birth and about what a father's role is at the big event. If you feel anxious that too much is being expected of you, why not talk about having a second birth partner - a friend or family member, perhaps, or a paid doula - to be there too. In fact just having the fallback of another birth partner is hugely helpful for some men. "I was worried that I'd faint or not be any help and that I'd have let Lucy down," says Sean, father of four-week-old Ella. "Having Lucy's sister there meant I didn't feel all the supporting was down to me. I felt I could be emotional and take a bit of a back seat for a while without feeling I'd failed, because Emma was still there with Lucy." What are the good things about being at the birth? "It was just such a wonderful moment when Sammy was born," says Colin. "We'd waited a long time for a baby and there's just nothing in my life that will compare with seeing my son for the first time exactly at the moment when he came into the world." Even when birth doesn't go to plan, few dads regret being there. Philip, 37, father of seven-month-old Ben, was shocked when the delivery room suddenly filled with medical staff and he was told he'd have to put on a surgical gown because it was going to be an assisted - and maybe even a caesarean - birth. "In the end Ben was born using rotational forceps -- a procedure which really took its toll on Karen," he says. "It wasn't easy being there for me - I felt I wanted to share Karen's physical pain, which of course I couldn't - but despite the trauma it was a magical experience. Also, because of what she'd been through Karen wasn't able to hold Ben at first so me being there meant he could be cuddled by one of his parents as soon as he was born - that's something I'll always feel glad I could do." For Steve, being at Poppy's birth brought home what an extraordinary physical feat birth is - and how resilient human beings are. "There was screaming and pain and blood, but it wasn't some horrible emergency," he says. "It was all leading towards this wonderful birth. It made me so aware of how strong we all are: of how strong a woman is, to push a baby out, and of how strong a baby is, to survive being squeezed through the birth canal...amazing." What are the difficult things? Nina Smith, an antenatal teacher with the National Childbirth Trust who's studied the role of men in the delivery room, says the hardest challenge is seeing your partner in pain and not being able to do anything about it. "Of course there are things you can try, and often it is small things that make a difference," she says. "But it takes confidence to try them, and that isn't easy - especially for the first-time father." Lots of dads say what they find tough in the early stages is knowing exactly what they can do to help. "I ended up feeling a bit of a spare part," says Andy. "Stella was obviously in pain and could do with some help, but I just didn't know what I could do to be of use. The midwife had some ideas but nothing seemed to be working - I felt lame, really." One of the most difficult things for dads to deal with is when events take an unexpected turn: sometimes everything seems to change very quickly, with doctors and other medical people pouring into the room and scary possibilities being discussed. "We'd been to antenatal classes and I knew I was supposed to keep my cool and ask all sorts of questions about what was being done and why," says Ed, father of eight-month-old Cameron. "But when the lights all went on and the doctor arrived and started saying we had to get into the theatre quick, my legs turned to jelly and I just prayed both Caroline and our baby was going to get through this alive." Many dads describe hair-raising scenarios in which they feared for the lives of their partner and unborn baby. Andrew, dad to four-week-old Oliver, explains how Tanya's longed-for low-tech delivery at a birth centre took a dramatic turn when her cervix failed to dilate fully. "Everything was fine for a few hours, with the contractions building up and Tanya coping well, and I thought we were going to sail through," he says. "But when things didn't move on enough the midwife said we'd have to transfer to the general hospital 15 miles away. "It was really scary: I wasn't allowed in the ambulance so I had to go in the car on my own. When we got to some road works the ambulance siren started up and the blue lights were flashing and they pulled on ahead, leaving me in the traffic jam. I was thinking the worst, wondering whether they'd both still be alive by the time I got to the hospital..." What can I do to prepare to be at our baby's birth? Preparation is crucial. It won't stop the unexpected, and it won't mean you breeze through whatever happens. But it will mean you are more aware of the possibilities involved in a labour and birth, and it could give you the confidence to try to help your partner cope with contractions. "To be honest I felt a bit daft practising rubbing Cathy's back during our antenatal course," says Paul, father of 14-month-old Freddie. "But strange as it was at the time, it did give me some ideas of things to try during the labour. Part of it is just daring to do something - you're so afraid of making things worse that the easy option is to do nothing and leave the midwife to suggest things, but the antenatal course did give me ideas about things I could suggest too - it gave me a role." If at all possible, join your partner in an antenatal course run by your health trust or by the National Childbirth Trust or by an active birth teacher. Some courses are for couples, others are for women but have a couples class -- do make sure you attend this. And don't keep putting off reading about labour and what to expect - it really does make a difference if you understand what happens during each stage of labour by the time you get to the delivery room. New dads' tips - what you need to know "Tanya was very keen on the birth centre, and I'm not saying it wasn't a good idea - but I wish I'd thought more about its limitations, and had some idea of what would happen if we needed to transfer to the general hospital. I'd say find out all you can about every scenario it's possible to envisage." - Andrew "Emily had had a previous caesarean and the hospital doctor didn't agree she should have a home birth. But it was what Emily wanted, and we did our research and found out the risks were negligible. In the end the midwives supported us and we got the delivery we wanted. I'd say find out what you need to know, and surround yourselves with supportive people. The Prophet answered their questions, pointing out the link between the two traditions, Islam being the continuation of the prophet Jesus's message, but he categorically rejected the dogma of the Trinity. FOR someone whose life was spent up in the air, fighter pilot Abdul Razak Ibrahim had something more down-to-earth on his mind:his wife’s cooking. A skilled cook, Poziah Mahdi had a home-based business, selling local kuih. Business was picking up and Abdul Razak had to make a choice. He decided, 20 years ago, to ground himself, and he’s never looked back, because business soared. So much so that today, Abdul Razak and his family own two restaurants and a laundrette. As fate would have it, Poziah died two years ago at the age of 47 and business is now largely handled by their daughter Norli Azira and her husband Faizi Mohd Zin, an IT consultant. Restoran Azira, which Abdul Razak named after his daughter, is located in Section 10 and is a favourite haunt for families. What makes it noteworthy? You can find every kampung delicacy that you’ve yearned for somewhere in the spread of dishes laid out at the restaurant. Norli Azira puts the success of their food business to the variety that they offer. “At any one time, we have more than 70 different dishes for lunch,” she said. Fast-moving dishes are asam pedas Johor, ikan bakar (the aromatic spicy fried chicken), masak lemak nangka, the pecal, which is served with peanut sauce, and the healthy ulam,” says Norli Azira, 26, a graduate in business administration. “All our dishes are cooked using family recipes,” she says. For instance, the grilled fish (terubuk, pari, mackeral or cencaru) comes either stuffed or marinated in special spices before they are wrapped in banana leaves and grilled over a slow fire. Those who want something different can choose from hawker-stall food like Hainanese chicken rice, laksa Penang, or the Bakso (mee curry, mee and mee hoon soup), all are sold in kiosks inside the restaurant. Breakfast-time also sees a big spread of dishes. Besides the usual nasi lemak, lontong and roti jala, the real crowd-puller is Restoran Azira’s offering of hard-to-find local pancakes such as the lempeng pisang and tapioca, aten with sambal tumis, asam pedas or curry. There’s a choice of 20 or more assortment of local kuihs. There’s also rice porridge. No Malay meal is complete without the pengat or bubur — the restaurant offers seven types of bubur, including bubur gandum, pulut hitam and bubur kacang. For tea-time, there’s another round of local delicacies in addition to the fried snacks such as perennial favourites pisang and ubi goreng. Business has been so good that Abdul Razak and his family opened another shop in Section 8 in the early 1990s. “The concept is that you can come here and expect to have something different every day,” says Norli, adding that they have five main cooks who have been with them for more than 10 years. In the beginning, Norli Azira says, the family sold the local delicacies in and around Section 2 as well as at the PKNS complex in Shah Alam city centre. In 1984, when they were able to buy the shophouse in Section 10, business took off. They expanded again, by renting the adjacent lot, to accommodate more diners. Having invested more than RM300,000 in the business, Norli Azira is determined to manage and sustain the business. “We depend a lot on the skills of our staff whom we have trained on the job. We appreciate them and have built a good relationship with them,” says the mother of three young children, whose home is on the first floor of the restaurant Her late mother loved nasi briyani so much she decided to open up a separate restaurant exclusively for nasi briyani Johor served with spicy, succulent beef, chicken and lamb. The new restaurant is just a few doors away. For variety, mee rebus, lempeng, nasi lemak and laksa Johore are also available. Norli Azira says that her main challenge is to maintain rapport with customers and try to maintain their prices despite rising cost of raw materials. Competition is healthy so they can’t remain complacent. Nowadays, food is not their only concern: they are also into the laundrette business bought over from a friend next door. Isn’t that a totally different business altogether? Sejuta wanita Malaysia makin gebu, gempal, gemuk

PUTRAJAYA 12 Jun – Kajian Bahagian Kawalan Penyakit Kementerian Kesihatan menunjukkan hampir 20 peratus penduduk dewasa dan 21 peratus kanak-kanak di negara ini mengalami ‘Masalah 3G’ iaitu Gebu, Gempal dan Gemuk.

Menteri Kesihatan, Datuk Seri Dr. Chua Soi Lek berkata, kajian tahun lalu itu menunjukkan satu juta atau 18.8 peratus wanita berusia 25 hingga 64 tahun adalah gemuk, manakala bagi lelaki sebanyak 13.9 peratus atau 850,000 orang.

Beliau berkata, ini bermakna bagi setiap 100 orang di kalangan mereka yang berumur 25 hingga 64 tahun, terdapat 14 orang lelaki yang gemuk sementara bagi wanita pula seramai 19 orang.

Trend obesiti yang serupa, katanya, turut melanda kanak-kanak.

Kajian Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) ke atas 12,000 murid sekolah di Semenanjung Malaysia menunjukkan 10.5 peratus daripada mereka berlebihan berat badan dan enam peratus dikategorikan sebagai gemuk.

‘‘Kalau dulu mungkin orang yang gebu, gempal serta gemuk dikatakan sihat dan sejahtera tetapi kini tidak lagi kerana ia menjurus kepada bahaya dan bencana.

“Gejala 3G sekarang sudah menjadi masalah kesihatan yang semakin serius, justeru langkah-langkah pencegahan perlu dilaksanakan oleh semua pihak,” kata Soi Lek pada seminar kesihatan Masalah 3G dan Kesannya Kepada Kesihatan Wanita anjuran Persatuan Suri dan Anggota Wanita Perkhidmatan Awam Malaysia (Puspanita) di sini hari ini.

Teks ucapan beliau dibacakan oleh Setiausaha Parlimen Kementerian Kesihatan, Datuk Lee Kah Choon.

Soi Lek berkata, berbanding kajian serupa 10 tahun lalu, jumlah penduduk dewasa berumur 18 tahun ke atas yang berlebihan berat badan adalah 16.6 peratus sementara kegemukan dianggarkan 4.4 peratus.

Beliau menambah, Malaysia merupakan negara rantau Asia Tenggara yang mempunyai masalah kegemukan kedua tertinggi.

Tegasnya, pendidikan kesihatan yang betul amat penting kerana kegemukan adalah permulaan untuk mendapat penyakit kronik seperti sakit jantung koronari, diabetes dan strok.

Menurut Pertubuhan Kesihatan Sedunia (WHO), kegemukan turut meningkatkan risiko mendapat kanser payu dara, kanser kolon, prostat, uterus, buah pinggang dan penyakit pundi hempedu menerusi perubahan hormon akibat kegemukan.

‘‘Kegemukan juga menjadi penyumbang kepada penyakit sendi atau ‘osteoartritis’ yang kerap dialami oleh golongan dewasa sehingga mengehadkan pergerakan mereka,” katanya.

Perkembangan ini antara lain berpunca daripada perubahan gaya hidup rakyat negara ini ekoran pertumbuhan pesat sosioekonomi yang memberangsangkan.

Sehubungan itu, Soi Lek mahu dua amalan asas dipatuhi oleh semua terutama kanak-kanak iaitu mengambil makanan berkhasiat mengikut keperluan tubuh dan melakukan aktiviti fizikal mencukupi.

‘‘Kegemukan tidak berlaku dalam sekelip mata. Penurunan berat badan juga tidak boleh dilakukan dalam tempoh singkat kerana mereka yang mengalami masalah 3G perlu menurunkan berat badan secara sistematik iaitu antara 0.5 hingga satu kilogram seminggu,” katanya.

Soi Lek menambah, penurunan berat badan yang drastik melalui pengambilan ubat-ubatan tidak diiktiraf oleh Kementerian Kesihatan akan mendatangkan kemudaratan dan seterusnya kematian.

Safety in motorway tunnel is of paramount importance and absolute priority to us. We will install many safety features to ensure public safety. These features will be highlighted at a latter time. The common question is how safe is the tunnel and will the vehicles in the motorway be submerged during an emergency. SMART is probably the only system that has incorporated the most number of emergency and contingency features in its operation system. As safety of vehicles in the motorway will be of paramount importance, SMART has additional features that are unique over and above the features seen in a normal motorway tunnel. The main features are:

• Automated Flood Control Gates: the water tight gates are installed on either ends of the motorway tunnel (within the stormwater section). In addition similar single flood control steel gates will be installed at both entrances and exits of the motorway tunnel. These gates will be operated with a hydraulic system.
• Cross Passage between decks at 250m intervals: the passage acts as emergency exits during an emergency.
• Ventilation/ escape shafts at 1km intervals: these powerful air ventilators will constantly renew the air and maintain the air quality within the motorway. To protect the ventilation system during the flooding, the system consists of a series of shafts each containing an exhaust and fresh air injector. This design enables the fans to be situation outside the SMART tunnel to create a longitudinal flow in the tunnel between the shafts that permits the air in the tunnel to be continuously renewed and the extraction of the exhaust fumes. The feature also allows for smoke control in the event of a fire.

Access to sites cut in crackdown on Internet scams

Note: Please read the last paragraph... SOURCE: The Star Online KUALA LUMPUR: The authorities have started a crackdown on cyber scams, blocking access to six illegal investment websites and raiding the offices of an Internet firm in the Klang Valley.

In a press statement released yesterday, the Securities Commission said the six websites were www.abbfund.com or www.abfund.us, www.cfdventure.com, www.swedenfund.com, www.uebond.com, www.esuissefund.com or www.efmf.com.pa and www.ecashfinance.com.

“SC will continue to work with Bank Negara, the Malaysian Communications Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and CyberSecurity Malaysia to track, identify and block access to websites promoting investment scams.

“It will take all measures to fight illegal investment activities, including taking enforcement action against operators and agents of illegal investment websites,” the statement said.

In the next few months, more scam websites will be blocked. The SC has identified some 60 websites that are involved in illegal cyber investments.

Bank Negara and the SC have begun joint operations with the police in tracking down such illegal e-investment activities.

On Monday, a raid was conducted on several AB Fund offices in the Klang Valley for suspected illegal deposit-taking and investment activities.

It was learnt that documents, equipment and servers were among the items confiscated from the premises, while statements were also taken from its employees.

An illegal deposit-taking operator can be jailed up to 10 years or fined RM10mil, or both, the statement said.

Recently, thousands of Malaysians were believed to have lost several million ringgit in an “investment” scheme known as buy-e-barrel, which closed down abruptly.

The scheme offered daily interest of between 2% and 3% for an investment of between US$100 (RM345) and US$2,000 (RM6,900).

Last year, two Datuks and six others were placed under remand to aid in investigations into a get-rich-quick scheme that allegedly promised “huge returns for a minimum investment”.

The alleged scam, known as SwissCash or Swiss Mutual Fund, claimed that investors’ funds were channelled to business activities ranging from oil exploration to shipping and agriculture in the Caribbean.

Investors were required to pay a registration fee of US$30 (RM103.50) to join the scheme, which allegedly offered huge returns for a minimum investment of US$100 .

The public are advised to refer to the SC’s Frequently Asked Questions: “Do Not Invest in Illegal Internet Investment Schemes” available at www.sc.com.my.

Investors who are still participating in such illegal investment schemes via the Internet have been reminded to withdraw their investments and terminate their accounts immediately as they would not be able to access their accounts once the websites are blocked.

SMART toll set at RM2

Source: The Star Online Note: highlight in italic KUALA LUMPUR: Users of the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART) will be charged a RM2 toll from 11.59pm on June 14, Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said.

He said the toll would be increased again in three years, adding that the price was right as the tunnel concessionaire had forked out RM640mil to build it.

Noting that there was no Government subsidy involved, he said: “In any part of the world where tunnels are built, the toll is higher.

“It is also an alternative route. Road users can continue to use the existing highway but if you need to speed up your journey, then use the tunnel,” he told reporters after opening a meeting of senior Works Ministry officers.

Motorists can enter the road tunnel from the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway near the Sungai Besi airfield runway and exit either at Jalan Davis and Jalan Tun Razak near the Kampung Pandan roundabout, or vice-versa.

The tunnel is open only to cars, MPVs and SUVs not exceeding 2m in height. No motorcycles, buses or lorries are allowed. Touch ‘n Go and SmartTag facilities are available for paying toll.

Asked why flash floods were still occurring even though the tunnel was open, Samy Vellu said he believed the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) had many projects underway to deal with the problem.

It was reported previously that the floodwater diversion part of the SMART project would only be operational next month, while the motorway tunnel was opened on May 14.

The project would be fully operational only after the construction of some 200 dams and flood retention ponds.

Qaf Chapter 50: Verse 18 Note Takers "Not a word does he utter but there is a sentinel by him, ready (to note it)." When man stand in the Court of Allah, in addition to the knowledge of Allah about a person’s worldly deeds, there will be two witnesses who will produce documented evidence of the person's actions and deeds. It is difficult for us to comprehend the true nature of the documentation. But from the facts that we are witnessing today, it seems certain that the voices and pictures and marks of man's actions and movements are being preserved and imprinted on every particle of the environment in which he lives and works, and each one of these can be reproduced in exactly the same form and voice. Man is doing this on a very limited scale with the help of his inventions, but the angels of God neither stand in need of these machines nor are bound by any limitation. Man's own body and everything around it is their tape and their film upon which they can record every voice and every image along with its minute and most delicate detail precisely and exactly, and can make man hear, on the Day of Resurrection, with his own ears, in his own voice, those very things which he talked about in the world, and can make him see, with his own eyes, the pictures of all his misdeeds, whose genuineness he would not possibly be able to deny. Here, one should also understand that in the Court of the Hereafter Allah will not punish anybody only on the basis of His own knowledge, but will punish him after fulfilling all the requirements of justice. Understanding the Prophet's Life

We Are Not Angels The Prophet, peace be upon him, kept striving to soothe the consciences of believers who were afraid of their own weaknesses and failings. One day, the Companion Hanzalah al-Usaydi met Abu Bakr and confessed to him that he was convinced of his own deep hypocrisy because he felt divided between contradictory feelings: in the Prophet's presence, he almost saw paradise and hell, but when he was away from him his wife and children and daily affairs caused him to forget. Abu Bakr in his turn admitted that he experienced similar tensions. They both went to the Prophet to question him about the seemingly dismal state of their spirituality. Hanzalah explained the nature of his doubts, and Muhammad answered: "By He who holds my soul in His hands, if you were able to remain in the [spiritual] state in which you are when in my company, and remember God permanently, the angels would shake your hands in your beds and along your paths. But it is not so, Hanzalah: there is a time for this [devotion, remembrance] and a time for that [rest, amusement]." (Bukhari, Muslim) Their situation had nothing to do with hypocrisy: it was merely the reality of human nature, which remembers and forgets, and which needs to remember precisely because it forgets, because human beings are not angels. Infinite Rewards Islam undoubtedly attaches great value to constancy in charity and giving alms to the poor and needy as a fundamental aspect of religion; however, Islam in no way restricts charitable deeds to the economic realm. Rather the concept of charity includes every imaginable act of kindness or contribution that one can possibly do for humans or any of God's creatures. Even as the concept of worship in Islam extends to all aspects of life, likewise, the definition of charity embraces all aspects of life. While emphasizing charity and alms-giving as an important aspect of religion, especially in case of those who are well to do, Islam simultaneously stresses the importance of good works in a general sense. In other words, it reckons every single word or deed one can possibly do with a view to improve the quality of life for God's creatures as a great act of charity meriting infinite rewards. There are numerous traditions that extend the concept of charity to include every imaginable act of virtue or kindness that humans are capable of performing. Imam Ibn Rajab sums up the Islamic teachings in this regard: "Human beings are obligated to give thanks to Allah every single day for His blessings on them by performing acts of virtue and charity on a daily basis. Among such acts that we ought to perform are those deeds or actions whose benefits extend to others. These include all acts of benevolence and compassion, helping those in distress or need, treating others compassionately, rendering acts of kindness towards them, protecting them against harm or injury, as well as any act of kindness towards each and every creature of God. Secondly, there are such works whose benefits affect only the person who is doing them. These include various kinds of dhikr (remembrance of Allah), saying benedictions on the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), reading the Quran, walking to mosque, simplicity in manners and conduct and attire, earning one's livelihood in lawful ways, engaging in introspection and self-examination, etc." It becomes abundantly clear from the above that if anyone volunteers time, money, or energy in whatever beneficial ways in order to improve the quality of life for those around us, it is undoubtedly considered as a noble act of charity in Islam, meriting infinite rewards.

"How could you possible know that?" asked the passer-by. "Because your answer is technically correct but absolutely useless, and the fact is I am still lost".

"You have such a good view from where you are, and yet you don't know where you are and you don't know where you are going. Al-Isra (The Ascension) Chapter 17: Verse 19 Road to The Final Destiny "Those who desire the life to come, and strive for it as it ought to be striven for, and are true Believers - they are the ones whose strivings find acceptance and reward" When the lifestyle of one who is working solely for the material gains of this world is compared with that of a person who is striving for the everlasting rewards of the Hereafter, there is seemingly very little difference. In both cases, each person is seen to be striving to maintain a quality life. But, it is clear that the non-believer cannot compare with the true Believer. The non-believer may find that all his worldly desires are fulfilled, but his accomplishments will only bring temporary satisfaction. The true Believer on the other hand, may achieve worldly gains but he realises that true contentment will only come when the ultimate reward of Paradise and the pleasure of his Lord is achieved. This understanding of life and its true objective is the secret of the believer's strength and support. This makes him the most powerful and resourceful person to walk upon the earth. Start, then, to prepare for the Hereafter today! Why waste your time and energy on what will perish when you can use the same to earn the delights and pleasures of the life to come? Everything you have must be put forward as an investment for that life, but you must keep in mind that the investment is not the objective. All that Allah has bestowed on you - body, mind, faculties and property - are valuables for investment, but the real objective is to earn the pleasure of Allah and the rewards of Paradise. Remember that your personal destiny and, therefore, the end of all your life's pursuits, lay in the Hereafter, but the road to that destiny lies in Dunya, in this world. Indeed the achievements made during the time of the Prophet were the results of full participation in this world - neither withdrawing nor retiring from it - for the sake of the Life to Come. The Prophet and his Companions planned for this world as though they were going to stay here forever but equally they sought the rewards of the Hereafter as though death was close at hand. Good Character In Islam the value of morality is very high. The fact is that if religion is the name of good conduct between man and man, then on the other hand in its spiritual sense it is also the name of the best relationship between man and his God, and in both these aspects there is the same reality. Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: “Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him, has said: 'A slave achieves, by means of the goodness of his character, great position and high honour in the Hereafter, though he may be weak in matters of worship; but on account of his wickedness of character he is thrown in the lowest recesses of the Hell.” [Tibrani] Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, is reported to have narrated: “I have heard the Prophet as saying: 'A Muslim who observes moderation in matter of worship, on account of the goodness of his character and decency achieves the position of that man who observes fast and recites Allah's verses during prayers in the night.” [Ahmed] Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, has quoted the Prophet as saying: “A believer's nobility is his religiosity, his tolerance is his intelligence, and his lineage is his good character.” [Hakim] Source: "Muslims Character" - Muhammad Al-Ghazali

Towards Better Writing

The Writing Process Writing is a process that seems to be complicated but actually demands merely the accomplishment of a few basic skills. It can be made easier if we understand our subject, our purpose, and our audience. Given that, we can minimize the frustrations associated with writing by breaking up the process into manageable steps. These steps are described below: A. Planning Writing begins with planning. This means thinking about what can and may be written about the subject at hand. It can also mean taking notes, making lists, or creating a rough outline of the ideas being presented. The thinking, verbalizing, and imagining that precede the first word down are just as important as the mechanics of writing the entire piece. B. Drafting To begin writing, we prepare the first draft in concise form, using no more words than necessary and avoiding vague words that will confuse the ideas being conveyed. While doing so, we must keep the readers and their ability to comprehend the main ideas in mind. Our use of descriptive examples can often clarify difficult ideas. The draft is the foundation of the written piece. Once it is ready, we review it to recognize usable elements - ideas, examples, and style - so that we may develop them in the revision stage. We should be prepared to throw out part or all of the draft if it does not work. C. Revising We go over our draft to weed out unimportant details and clarify any vague ideas. However, revision is not to be considered merely a mechanism for fixing the first draft; it should be treated as a means to create the final product. In this phase of writing, it is not unusual to change a major portion of our work, its tone, or the point of view from which it is written. D. Proofreading We proofread the final manuscript to check for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. For quick reference, it helps to have a dictionary and a handbook of grammar rules handy.
