Living the Quran

Saba (Sheba) Chapter 34: Verse 46 (Partial) Awakening Say: "I do admonish you on one point: that ye do stand up before Allah, - (it may be) in pairs, or (it may be) singly - and reflect (within yourselves). The first of the ranks of the journey of servitude (ubudiyah) is awakening, which is alarming and stirring up of the heart from the sleep of heedlessness. By Allah, how priceless is that revitalising alarm! How valuable and indispensable for the journey! Whoever experiences it he has indeed experienced the breeze of success. Without experiencing it, everyone is lost in heedlessness. His hearing is asleep while his eyes appear awake. It is this blessed alarm that wakes one up and makes him a seeker of Allah. The seeker now rolls up his sleeves and musters up his courage to set out on the journey to Allah, station by station. The first realization that illuminates the seeker upon this awakening is the immensity of the gifts of Allah upon him. The believer's heart glances at the gifts and bounties of Allah and is overwhelmed by his own sense of inability to even count them, let alone thank Allah for them all. The second realisation is the realisation of the inadequacy of his gratitude and worship to Allah. These realisations are in fact both the cause and the effect of the first station of awakening. As the believer advances on his journey and as his heart is sharpened by these two realisations, it becomes incumbent upon him to notice more and more the innumerable inner and outer, open and hidden gifts of Allah and recognise his own shortcoming in thanking the Giver adequately. Understanding the Prophet's Life

Needs of the household When we think of a young religious person, too often we think of someone who spends all his time with other Muslims, going to the Islamic centre, or attending religious classes. When he is not outside engaged in these activities, we think of him devoting all his time to personal devotions like reading Islamic books, reciting the Quran, or listening to recorded lectures. Sadly, we do not think of this young person having anything to do with the rest of the household. This is, in fact, a grave mistake that many religious young people make. The worldly needs of the household must be met. If the “pious” person fails to carry out his proper role at home someone else will have to be the one to carry it out. That someone else may be deficient in his religion, but because he is the one taking care of the needs of the household, he is going to be the one to have the greatest influence. His words will be heeded and his commands obeyed. His opinions will carry weight. As for the religious young person, his word will carry no weight whatsoever, since he never does anything to benefit anyone else. Some of our religious young men and women seek to excuse themselves from their household chores with excuses like reading the Quran or listening to a taped lecture! Then they wonder how they can have a positive affect on the other members of their household who are engaged in sinful activities. In order to be able to counteract the sinful behaviour that goes on in the home and bring about positive change, we must first build up our own position within your household by serving our family and catering to their needs. Some of our young, religious people flee from their homes in one way or another after becoming religious. They feel that they cannot bear staying at home surrounded by what they regard as sinful behaviour or as their family’s casual religious attitudes. Some seek to escape the temptations at home by going overseas to study or by simply moving away from home. There are often clear signs in their behaviour that they are merely running away. Some of them even leave home without their parents’ permission. They forget that when a man asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) if he could go to war, the Prophet (peace be upon him) immediately asked him if his parents were alive. When he said that they were, the Prophet said: “Your jihad is to take care of your parents!” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (2728) and Sahîh Muslim (4623)] They also forget that when another young man approached the Prophet (peace be upon him) to go and fight, the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked him if his mother was alive. When he found out that she was, he told the man: “Woe unto you! Attend her at her feet and you will attain Paradise.” [Sunan Ibn Mâjah (2771). Blindspot!

Ribaa and Interest An argument often presented by many Muslims is that ribaa mentioned in the Quran is actually different from what we call ‘interest’ nowadays. It is important, therefore, to look at what qualified as ribaa in the pre-Islamic times (Ribaa al-Jahiliyyah). We find various kinds of situations where ribaa comes into play. A brief look at these reveals that there is no difference between the pre-Islamic ribaa and the present-day notion of interest. “Qatadah narrates that the ribaa of pre-Islamic times was that where one person bought property from another with a promise to pay at a later time. If the buyer could not pay the agreed upon amount on the settlement date, the seller would extend the payment period and the amount owed.” According to this example by Qatadah, the Arabs of the pre-Islamic times considered as ribaa the increase in the amount owed from the original settlement date to the revised settlement date. “Mujahid held the opinion that the ribaa of the pre-Islamic times was that where the borrower would agree to pay more than the borrowed sum if given a specific time horizon to pay.” This is increase in amount owed due to failure to pay or additional time is precisely what we call interest in the present-day economic system. In both cases, we see the debt being swapped for a larger amount based on the passage of time. “According to Imam Razi the norm of the pre-Islamic days was that the borrower of monies would agree to pay an agreed upon amount on a monthly basis for an agreed upon period of time. At the expiration of that period, the borrower would return the original sum. However, if he could not pay, he would be given more time in return for higher monthly payments.” These monthly payments were also called ribaa by the pre-Islamic Arabs. Child's Play

Hello, this is me with my baby bro when he was 7 mths old. Now he is a bit older, going to be 1 year 3 mths. I like to play and watch channel 63 with him but he always likes to play with the TV. Even after i scold him, he still do it.

Papa and mama told me that he is still a baby and i am already a big boy, so don't gaduh-gaduh.

In September 07, i will follow my papa to UK. Mama and my brother also ikut juga. Papa said our new home will be in L-E-E-D-S. Papa said "Opis papa hantar papa; 2 tahun".

Does this mean, i have to change school?! No longer can go to and play with friends at Tadika Twinkle Tots?! But papa said at L-E-E-D-S ada snow!! In that case, ok. I have to find new friends.

Papa also wonders if any of papa's old friends is still there?? Papa said he managed to contact Uncle MatYat thru friendster. Who else is there?

Living the Quran

Al-Araf (The Heights) Chapter 7: Verses 106-108 Miraculous Signs "(Fir'aun) said: "If indeed thou hast come with a Sign, show it forth, if thou tellest the truth." Then (Musa) threw his rod, and behold! it was a serpent, plain (for all to see)! And he drew out his hand, and behold! it was white to all beholders!" Moses was granted these two miraculous signs in order to provide testimony to his being a Messenger of God, the creator and sovereign of the universe. Whenever the Prophets introduced themselves as God's Message-bearers, people asked them to produce some miraculous sign, to perform something supernatural. In response to those demands the Prophets produced what the Quran terms as 'signs', and which are called 'miracles' by theologians. Those who tend to play down the supernatural character of such signs or miracles, and who try to explain them in terms of natural laws of causation, in fact attempt to build a mid-way house between believing and disbelieving in the statements of the Quran. Such an approach can hardly be considered reasonable. What it does demonstrate, however, is how such people can be pulled in two opposite directions. On the one hand, they are not inclined to believe in a Book which abounds in narrations of a supernatural kind. On the other hand, being born followers of their ancestral religion, they are not inclined to reject the Book which carries supernatural narrations. With regard to miracles, there are two basic questions that people should ask themselves. Did God, after creating the universe and establishing a system of natural causations therein, suspend Himself such that it is no longer possible for Him to interfere in the workings of the universe? Or does He still hold the reins to His realm in His owns Hands so that His command is enforced every moment, and He does retain the power to alter the shape of things and the normal course of events - either partially or fully, - as and when He wills? It is impossible for those who respond in the affirmative to the first question to accept the idea of miracles. For clearly miracles do not fit in with their concept of God and the universe. Honesty demands that instead of indulging in far-fetched explanations of Quranic statements on miracles, such people should clearly declare that they do not believe in the Quran. For quite obviously the Quran is explicit, even quite definite in affirming the former concept of God. As for those who, being convinced by Quranic arguments, respond in the affirmative to the second question regarding God and the universe, for them there is no difficulty in accepting miracles. Understanding the Prophet's Life

Relieving Distress of Others One of the greatest things that will relieve a person's distress on the Day of Resurrection is his efforts in this world to relieve the distress of those who are in distress, and to help those who are in need, and to make things easy for those who are in difficulty, and to overlook the mistakes of those who err. In Muslim it is narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "Whoever relieves a believer of distress in this world, Allah will relieve him of some of the distress of the Day of Resurrection. Whoever makes things easy for those who are in difficulty, Allah will make things easy for him in this world and in the next. Whoever conceals (the faults of) a Muslim in this world, Allah will conceal him (his faults) in this world and in the Hereafter. Allah will help the slave so long as the slave helps his brother." [Mishkaat al-Masaabeeh, 1/71, hadith no. 204.] Bukhari narrated from Abdullah ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The Muslim is the brother of his fellow-Muslim; he should not mistreat him or let him down. Whoever meets the needs of his brother, Allah will meet his needs, and whoever relieves a Muslim of some distress, Allah will relieve him of some of the distress of the Day of Resurrection. Whoever conceals (the faults of) a Muslim, Allah will conceal him (his faults) in this world and the next." Blindspot!

Integralization Islamophobia is, by and large, an occurrence visited upon Muslims by non-Muslims. While it may be a distinct phenomenon, independent of any Muslim creation, Muslim communities possess the ability to significantly decrease its impact. It remains, however, a taboo to seriously engage Muslim communities in that debate, even if many scholars and intellectuals are in favour of it. The answer is not as easy as assimilation or integration, which both have already received meanings in the English language, particularly in the context of multiculturalist debates and discussions, and are not essentially positive courses of action to pursue. I have struggled to find a word that encompassed what I think may escape the harms of the above, but will also incorporate their benefits. Localization does not quite accomplish the task, and acculturalization does not exist in the vocabulary. But the basic principle of the approach, whereby one becomes integral to and embedded in one's society, has been recognized as a matter of course in Islam, for the prophets invariably began their invitation with the words, "O my people" and were sent as members of those peoples. For who better to deliver the message than one of their own, who knew their ways inside and out, even if he chose not to partake of them? Siasatan Utusan Malaysia selama tiga hari berturut-turut berdasarkan senarai dikeluarkan SC mendapati, antara laman web yang tidak lagi boleh diakses ialah www.fical.net; www.winlifund.com; www.al-arabic.com; www.buyebarrel.com; www.eukgold.com; www.solidinvestment.com. dan www.smartcash.com. Selain itu, skim pelaburan Internet terawal di Malaysia, SwissCash yang mendakwa diterbitkan oleh Swiss Mutual Fund juga berdepan masalah sama. Laman webnya sebelum ini, www.swisscash.biz telah ditutup manakala laman web terbarunya, www.swisscash.net juga sudah tidak boleh diakses. SwissCash sebelum ini dilaporkan mempunyai 50,000 pelabur dengan jumlah pelaburan melebihi RM200 juta. Pada 12 Jun lalu, SC mengambil langkah drastik menyekat akses kepada enam laman web yang dipercayai menawarkan skim pelaburan haram kepada orang ramai. Enam laman web terbabit ialah www.abbfund.com atau abfund.us, www.cfventure.com, www. swedenfund.com, www.uebond.com, www. esuissefund.com atau www.efmf. com.pa dan www.ecashfinance.com dan tindakan itu akan dilaksanakan secara berperingkat dan berterusan. Pada hari sama, BNM dan polis menyerbu pejabat pengendali skim itu yang disyaki menjalankan pengambilan deposit tanpa lesen dan membuat pelaburan haram. Dengan kerjasama SC, BNM dan polis menggeledah pejabat AB Fund yang beroperasi di ibu negara, iaitu salah satu skim cepat kaya Internet yang popular di kalangan pelakon dan penyanyi terkenal di negara ini. Pada 31 Mei lalu, SC memberi amaran kepada semua pelabur skim yang tidak sah melalui Internet supaya mengeluarkan wang pelaburan sebelum 11 Jun 2007 kerana selepas itu akses ke laman-laman web yang mempromosikan skim sedemikian akan disekat. Ini bermakna pelabur yang tidak mengeluarkan wang masing-masing bukan saja tidak dapat lagi mengakses laman web itu malah tidak dapat memasuki akaun mereka bagi melakukan sebarang urus niaga. Pada 12 April lalu, Majlis Fatwa Kebangsaan membuat ketetapan bahawa semua pelaburan di Internet, termasuk SwissCash yang menjanjikan faedah atau pulangan tetap sebagai haram kerana berunsur riba. Keputusan majlis itu memberi kesan kepada aktiviti pelaburan melibatkan tidak kurang 500,000 orang Islam termasuk golongan kenamaan dan profesional berpangkat Tan Sri dan Datuk. Orang ramai boleh melayari laman web SC di www.sc.com.my bagi mendapat perkembangan lanjut berhubung perkara tersebut.

KUALA LUMPUR 18 Jun – Percayakah anda bahawa Malaysia menjadi ‘tempat lambakan’ pembantu rumah berkualiti rendah atau dikategorikan sebagai kelas ‘E’ - kurang cerdik, tidak menarik, kurang cekap dan gagal berkomunikasi dengan baik.

Sebaliknya, gadis-gadis pembantu rumah yang cantik, bertubuh menarik, boleh berbahasa Inggeris serta membaca dan menulis, dihantar ke negara yang menawarkan gaji lumayan seperti Hong Kong, Singapura, Taiwan dan Timur Tengah.

Presiden Persatuan Agensi Pekerja Asing (PAPA), Datuk Raja Zulkepley Dahalan mendakwa, pekerja-pekerja kelas E itulah yang banyak menimbulkan masalah kepada majikan.

‘‘Mereka inilah yang gagal menyesuaikan diri dengan persekitaran baru dalam tempoh yang singkat sehingga memberi tekanan kepada majikan,’’ katanya kepada Utusan Malaysia di sini hari ini.

Menurut beliau, walaupun mereka telah menjalani kursus di pusat latihan di Indonesia selama sebulan diikuti aktiviti suai kenal melibatkan latihan bertutur di sini selama beberapa hari, mereka masih gagal memberikan khidmat terbaik.

‘‘Majikan kerap menghadapi masalah kerana pembantu rumah yang diperoleh gagal melaksanakan tugas dengan baik.

‘‘Ekoran masalah komunikasi dan budaya yang berbeza, lain yang disuruh lain yang dibuat selain mengulangi kesalahan serupa dan akhirnya menimbulkan kemarahan majikan,’’ ujar beliau.

Raja Zulkepley mengulas kejadian dera yang sering menimpa pembantu rumah asing terutama dari Indonesia sehingga ada yang sanggup membahayakan diri untuk melarikan diri.

Kejadian terbaru melibatkan seorang wanita Indonesia berusia dalam lingkungan 30-an dikenali sebagai Samerin yang nekad melarikan diri dari rumah majikannya sejak empat bulan lalu.

Dalam kejadian Sabtu lalu, mangsa bertindak turun melalui tingkap dari tingkat 15 sebuah kondominium di Sentul menggunakan kain dan pakaian yang disambung-sambung sebelum diselamatkan oleh Pasukan Bomba dan Penyelamat Sukarela Malaysia (MVFRA) yang kebetulan sedang mengadakan latihan kebakaran di bangunan berhampiran.

Mengulas lanjut, Raja Zulkepley berkata, sehingga kini terdapat sejumlah 320,000 orang pembantu rumah asing - 94.8 peratus daripadanya terdiri daripada rakyat Indonesia, Filipina (6,100 orang) dan bakinya 10,000 orang dari negara-negara lain seperti Sri Lanka dan Kemboja.

Katanya, kira-kira 80 peratus daripada jumlah pembantu rumah Indonesia diambil bekerja oleh majikan berbangsa Cina.

Ujar beliau, hampir kesemua pembantu rumah itu datang dari kawasan yang terpisah dari arus pemodenan menyebabkan mereka menghadapi kejutan budaya.

Katanya, majikan pula mungkin bersikap terlalu mementingkan kesempurnaan atas alasan mereka telah membayar beribu-ribu ringgit untuk mendapatkan pembantu rumah menggunakan saluran yang betul.

Sehubungan itu, Raja Zulkepley meminta majikan bertolak ansur dan memberi masa kepada pembantu rumah masing-masing mengadaptasi diri dengan persekitaran bagi mengelakkan mereka merasakan seolah-olah ‘didera’ sehingga gagal memberi tumpuan kepada tugas harian.
