Eight killed in five-vehicle crash near toll plaza

picture from Utusan Online
NEWS SOURCE: The Star Online ALOR STAR: Seven members of a family and another person were killed in a horrific accident near the Hutan Kampung toll plaza, near here, yesterday.

The 3.53pm incident occurred after a trailer rammed into a Proton Iswara carrying the family and a Perodua Kancil in front of it.

The family was pinned under the wheels of the trailer as the heavy vehicle crashed into the Kancil, in which the eighth victim was travelling.

All eight died on the spot while a six-month-old boy in the Kancil was left in an unconscious state. The child’s mother, the driver of the car, suffered a fractured right leg.

The impact caused the Kancil to crash into an Isuzu Trooper, which, in turn, rammed into another trailer.

All five vehicles were heading towards Bukit Kayu Hitam, at the Malaysian-Thai border.

The incident, which occurred about 200m from the toll plaza, caused a traffic jam for over two hours.

Among the dead were three children, identified as Mohd Afif Alias, six, Nurul Izati Alias, four, and one-year-old Uzma Daniel Syahril.

They were travelling with their grandfather Ilias Salleh, 54, and three of his children: Suraya Ilias, 32, Mohd Azlan Ilias, 31, and Sawiyah Ilias, 27.

The victim in the Kancil was identified as Wan Rohani Wan Ibrahim, 54, who was travelling with her daughter Umi Syakila Sobri, 23, and grandson six-month-old Mohd Aris Irfan.

The driver and two passengers in the Isuzu escaped unharmed.

Rescuers took 90 minutes to extricate the bodies of the victims from the mangled Iswara.

Ilias and his family, from Kampung Baru in Tasek Gelugor, near Butterworth, were believed to be going to a relative’s house in Changlun.

Wan Rohani and her daughter were on their way home to Kampung Lubok Batu in Wang Tepus, Jitra, after visiting a relative who had delivered a baby at the Alor Star Hospital.

Kota Setar OCPD Asst Comm Zainal Abidin Kasim said the driver of the trailer had lodged a report and told police he could not stop his vehicle in time.

The Truth Behind This Month's Blue Moon

Source: Yahoo Online

Joe Rao SPACE.com Skywatching Columnist SPACE.com

Thursday, May 31 brings us the second of two full Moons for North Americans this month. Some almanacs and calendars assert that when two full Moons occur within a calendar month, that the second full Moon is called the "Blue Moon."

The full Moon that night will likely look no different than any other full Moon. But the Moon can change color in certain conditions.

After forest fires or volcanic eruptions, the Moon can appear to take on a bluish or even lavender hue. Soot and ash particles, deposited high in the Earth's atmosphere can sometimes make the Moon appear bluish. Smoke from widespread forest fire activity in western Canada created a blue Moon across eastern North America in late September 1950. In the aftermath of the massive eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in June 1991 there were reports of blue moons (and even blue Suns) worldwide.

Origin of the term

The phrase "Once in a blue Moon" was first noted in 1824 and refers to occurrences that are uncommon, though not truly rare. Yet, to have two full Moons in the same month is not as uncommon as one might think. In fact, it occurs, on average, about every 32 months. And in the year 1999, it occurred twice in a span of just three months!

For the longest time no one seemed to have a clue as to where the "Blue Moon Rule" originated. Many years ago in the pages of Natural History magazine, I speculated that the rule might have evolved out of the fact that the word "belewe" came from the Old English, meaning, "to betray." "Perhaps," I suggested, "the second full Moon is 'belewe' because it betrays the usual perception of one full moon per month."

But as innovative as my explanation was, it turned out to be completely wrong.

More mistakes

It was not until the year 1999 that the origin of the calendrical term "Blue Moon" was at long last discovered. It was during the time frame from 1932 through 1957 that the Maine Farmers' Almanac suggested that if one of the four seasons (winter, spring, summer or fall) contained four full Moons instead of the usual three, that the third full Moon should be called a "Blue Moon."

But thanks to a couple of misinterpretations of this arcane rule, first by a writer in a 1946 issue of Sky & Telescope magazine, and much later, in 1980 in a syndicated radio program, it now appears that the second full Moon in a month is the one that's now popularly accepted as the definition of a "Blue Moon."

This time around, the Moon will turn full on May 31 at 9:04 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (6:04 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time).

But for those living in Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia, that same full Moon occurs after midnight, on the calendar date of June 1. So in these regions of world, this will not be second of two full Moons in May, but the first of two full Moons in June. So, if (for example) you live London, you'll have to wait until June 30 to declare that the Moon is "officially" blue.

Dikompaun RM22,500 -- Restoran jual Milo ais RM1.80 dikenakan denda maksimum

//Abu Muhammad Source: Utusan Malaysia Online

Siling Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim pula runtuh

Al-Imran (The Family of Imran) Chapter 3: Verse 14 (Partial)

Curbing Desires "Fair in the eyes of people is the love of things they desire"

As there is no limit to human desire, the pursuit of pleasure and material goods can continue. In reference to this, the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, pointed out that if a man has a valley of gold, he would most likely wish for another one (al-Bukhari). Thus, if greed is not controlled, ultimately it can lead people into a senseless chase after pleasures, material goods, wealth and power, never reaching a point of satisfaction. It is regrettable that the whole edifice of our society today and our way of life is raised on these foundations. Materialistic thought will, therefore, give rise to a culture where individuals are most likely to be indifferent to the problems of others, since each person becomes mainly concerned about their own pleasures. The social tensions, conflicts and evils emerging from such a world-view are not, therefore, difficult to comprehend.

Understanding the Prophet's Life

Excellence in Cordial Relations

Ihsan adds beauty and excellence to cordial relations. No relationship can be established on measuring constantly whether one has fulfilled one's obligations. One should not be very particular about one's own rights, with a view to ensuring that one gets all that is one's due. Rather, one should be ever-ready to do favours for others. A strictly business-like relationship may work. However, this would be lacking in mutual love, gratitude, sacrifice, sincerity and warmth, which are so important in life. Doing good stands for excellent conduct, generous dealings, a sympathetic attitude, good manners, forgiveness and making allowances. One should be prepared to accept less than one's due and give others more than what they deserve. This point is eloquently made in the following hadith:

"O Allah! Let me maintain ties with him who severs these. Let me grant him his due that deprives me of what is due to me. Let me forgive him who wrongs me." (Mishkat)

In other words this character trait demands that one should give others over and above what is their due. More importantly, one should do good to him who wrongs one. For true believers are those who repulse evil with their good deeds.

Towards Better Writing

Problems

Among the most common mistakes that writers make are:

  • researching and collecting too little or too much data
  • organizing the subject matter poorly
  • failing to revise the first draft
  • using words or sentences that are too long
  • expressing a writer-centred point of view
  • directing the writing to the wrong audience

In addition to the above, there are mistakes of grammar and style that include:

  • redundancy
  • run-on sentences
  • cliches and overused expressions
  • lack of structure
  • archaic language
  • inadequate introduction and conclusion
  • weak transitions

Writing is a powerful and effective tool and a very important means of Dawa. As such, we should pay personal attention to developing our ability to write well.

Swarms of cicadas emerging in Midwest

Amazing how this tiny creature can cause havoc to us..

SOURCE: Yahoo News online

By TARA BURGHART, Associated Press Writer Sun May 20, 4:48 PM ET

CHICAGO - Coming soon: Brood XIII. It sounds like a bad horror movie. But it's actually the name of the billions of cicadas expected to emerge this month in parts of the Midwest after spending 17 years underground.

The red-eyed, shrimp-sized, flying insects don't bite or sting. But they are known for mating calls that produce a din that can overpower ringing telephones, lawn mowers and power tools.

Brood XIII is expected across northern Illinois, and in parts of Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana. Cicadas live only about 30 days as adults, and their main goal is mating.

They don't harm humans, although they are clumsy and might fly into people. Birds, squirrels and pets, especially dogs, love to eat them, and they are high in protein.

"They're going to have quite a meal. It's going to be like Thanksgiving for them," said Tom Tiddens, supervisor for plant health care at the Chicago Botanic Garden.

They are periodical cicadas, which are only found in the eastern half of North America. The annual, or dog-day cicadas, that appear every summer are common around the world.

The last massive emergence of periodical cicadas was in 2004, when Brood X emerged after 17 years underground in parts of 15 Eastern states. Some broods emerge after 13 years.

As nymphs burrowing underground, cicadas suck sap from tree roots. Almost all members of a group, or brood, burst from the ground within a couple days of each other.

They quickly climb the nearest vertical surface to molt and unroll their wings. In some heavily wooded areas, as many as 1.5 million cicadas per acre will crowd onto trees, expert say.

"It's one of the greatest insect emergences on Earth," said Daniel Summers, an entomologist at The Field Museum.

A single male's shrill courtship call can reach 90 decibels, equivalent to a kitchen blender. That could sour plans for outdoor events over the next few weeks.

Ravinia Festival, a 103-year-old music festival held north of Chicago, revised its schedule to avoid classical musicians having to compete with the insects, said festival president and CEO Welz Kauffman.

June will see more pop bands outdoors, a few concerts moved indoors and a visit from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. "With 350 voices on stage, they can hold their own against the bugs," Kauffman said.

At the Chicago Botanic Garden, spokeswoman Gloria Ciaccio joked that her advice for brides holding outdoor weddings there will be to put the tent flaps down and turn the music up.

An Illinois company that provides ice sculptures has turned down several outdoor parties over the next month. That's because of what happened when Nadeau Ice Sculptures owner Jim Nadeau delivered a swan statue to a wedding in 1990, during the area's last emergence of the periodical cicadas.

"We put our tray down and immediately the cicadas came off the ground and attacked the ice. Literally, it was a moving sculpture, this big black ugly mass of cicadas constantly moving," said Nadeau.

"I don't want to talk myself out of work, but that was just too gross," he said.

Exactly when the cicadas will emerge is a subject of debate, although there is agreement they emerge once the soil temperature is consistently 64 to 65 degrees for several days. Biologists and insect experts predict the cicadas will emerge between Tuesday and June 1.

The best place to see — and hear — the cicadas will be forest preserves, golf courses and any land where there are older trees where the soil has been undisturbed since 1990.

Freelance writer David Hammond runs the LTHForum, a Chicago-based Internet site devoted to culinary matters, and his "foodie" friends want to see what the cicadas taste like.

The insects are eaten in other parts of the world, with descriptions of the taste ranging from shrimp to canned asparagus to not much at all.

No recipe has been decided upon yet, but Hammond assumes they will be fried and perhaps accompanied by a dip or salsa.

"Honestly, they'll probably go down easier that way," he said. "Who knows? Maybe we'll love it. We may have to travel around the country as infestations occur."

Living the Quran

Al-Imran (The Family of Imran) Chapter 3: Verse 191 (Partial)

Appreciating Greatness "O our Lord, You did not create [all] this without purpose!"

In human nature two qualities are not unknown to us: (1) the admiration of greatness, and (2) the acknowledgement of kindness. When you see a precision instrument or a latest appliance, or an exquisite picture, or an eloquent article, you do not stop talking of its beauty until your praise extends to its creator. The deep wisdom or skill of the individuals makes you bow your intellect to them involuntarily in respect and admiration. Likewise, when someone does you a favor, you always remember it, and your tongue expresses gratitude just as your heart is filled with praise and awe! A poet says: "Your favor has gained you three things from me: My hand, my tongue, and my hidden heart."

The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) came to arouse these two qualities in the hearts of humans towards the One Who is most deserving of them. Do you not admire the greatness and salute its possessor? Do you not appreciate kindness and show gratitude to its doer? You surely admire the inventor of the aeroplane, and every time you see it streaking through the atmosphere your praise of his genius increases. So what do you think, therefore, of the One Who causes the thousands of stars to move in space without stopping or deviating? What do you think of Him Who created the mind of that inventor and deposited intelligence in the folds of his brain so that he could produce such things that arouse our admiration?

Is not your Lord and the Lord of all things more deserving of your praise for His greatness and favors? Why are our hearts so hardened today? When you truly recognize His Mercy and Greatness through the magnificence of His creation and blessings to us, you would be ashamed to attack Him, or disobey Him, or neglect His guidelines for leading our worldly life, or to attribute anything unworthy to Him. You would surely exclaim, together with the people of knowledge and intelligence, the above verse: Rabbana, ma Khalaqta hazha Baatilan!

Understanding the Prophet's Life

Tie your Camel: Do your Part

One day Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, noticed a Bedouin leaving his camel without tying it. He asked the Bedouin, "Why don't you tie down your camel?" The Bedouin answered, "I put my trust in Allah." The Prophet then said, "Tie your camel first, then put your trust in Allah" (Tirmidhi).

Muslims must never become fatalistic. Although we know only Allah is in control and that He has decreed all things, we are each responsible for making the right choices and doing the right thing in all situations of our lives. We must take action. We must work to alleviate the hardships we, our families and our communities face.

Ask yourself the following questions if you are worried about the state of the world: are you part of the peace movement? Is your Masjid part of the peace movement? Are you part of an interfaith group with an agenda of peace and justice? Are you working with a group fighting discrimination? If your answer is no, it is time that you sat down to plan your share of time and money in finding solutions to the problems you face.

Turn each worry into a Dua and each Dua into an action plan. That will show your commitment to your request and will focus your energy in the right direction.

Towards Better Writing

Purpose

Writing is a many-faceted tool. We write to inform, persuade, inspire, or even threaten others. It is important to write well because writing can:

  • make ideas and information permanent in a form easily accessible for reference and duplication;
  • move others to act according to its message;
  • free up the writer's time by enabling his ideas to be duplicated and distributed among wider audiences;
  • guide and direct learners by communicating new or different ides in a precise manner;
  • establish credibility and authority by introducing the writer to the reader;
  • increase chances for success by precisely and permanently spelling out choices or courses of action;
  • be a very effective means of dawa.

As a tool for communication with others, writing must be sharpened through practice. Our choice of words and subject matter are very important in making our writing not only clear and precise but also understandable and interesting.

37 laman web skim cepat kaya dipantau

SOURCE: Utusan Malaysia Online

Living the Quran

Al-Anfal (The Spoils of War) Chapter 8: Verse 27

Betraying the Trust "O ye that believe! betray not the trust of Allah and the Messenger, nor misappropriate knowingly things entrusted to you."

To abandon the duties God has assigned to the Muslim community is a betrayal of God and His Messenger. The basic issue in the Islamic faith is that of attributing Godhead purely and solely to God alone, following only what has been conveyed to us by His Messenger, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This basic issue also entails that God's Messenger is the only source to convey what God wants of human beings, and this means that they must follow all his orders and directives. As this includes both conviction and action, the Muslim community, which has declared its belief in God, is warned against abandoning this whole issue. To do so is equal to betraying God and His Messenger.

Believers are also warned against betraying the trust they have accepted when they pledged their loyalty to God's Messenger and declared their acceptance of islam. Islam means submission to God. This is not merely a verbal statement, but a complete code of living that must be implemented, even though such implementation faces numerous obstacles and difficulties. It is a code that aims to build human life on the basis of the declaration that there is no deity other than God. The usurpers who tyrannize people and claim sovereignty for themselves must be taken to task. Right and justice must be maintained for all people. Human life must be built entirely on the basis of the divine constitution. All these are aspects of the trust God has placed in the Muslim community. Those who do not fulfil their trust actually betray their pledges to God and His Messenger.

Understanding the Prophet's Life

Stimulating the Intelligence

Throughout his mission the Prophet, peace be upon him, sought his Companion's advice, encouraging them to express their opinions and paying them careful attention. Furthermore, the Prophet had evolved a genuine teaching method through which he allowed the Muslims to develop their critical faculties, express their talents, and mature in his presence. He would often ask questions on various subjects and give the answers only after his Companions had thought by themselves and expressed different conjectures. Sometimes, more subtly, he would utter a judgment in a paradoxical form, thereby prompting his listeners to consider the matter more deeply. For example, he once said: "A strong man is not a man who overcomes his enemy!" The Companions mulled this over among themselves, then asked him: "Then who is a strong man?" The Prophet surprised his audience and led them to a deeper understanding of the question with his answer: "A strong man is a man who controls himself when he is angry!" He would sometimes speak figuratively: "Wealth does not lie in the riches you possess!" After the Companions pondered this, Muhammad would elaborate: "True wealth is the wealth of the soul." On occasion the Prophet's statement appeared to contradict common sense or ethics: "Help your brother, whether he is just or unjust!" The Companions could not but wonder about the nature of the help they were to give an unjust brother: how could that be? The Prophet, inverting the perspective, would add: "Prevent him [the unjust brother] from acting unjustly, such is the way for you to help him!"

Both by asking questions and by formulating paradoxical or seemingly contradictory statements, the Prophet stimulated his Companions' critical sense and their ability to go beyond mere blind obedience or mechanical mind-destroying imitation. This method developed the intellectual capacities necessary for consultations to be effective. By stimulating their intelligence and giving them opportunities to speak, he exercised a type of leadership that made it possible for his Companions to learn to assert themselves and take initiative.

Blindspot!

Miserliness and Meanness of the Heart

Free yourself from miserliness and meanness of the heart. The more humble and polite you are, the more strongly will you believe that everything belongs to Allah and that whatever you give now shall be returned in the form of a much greater reward.

The more you believe that if you were to stop charity it would come to haunt you, the easier will it be for you to be magnanimous. The more your heart is filled with the Greatness of Allah, the more generous your heart will become. The greater your ability to negate ego, status, arrogance, vanity, wealth, and the more you feel that you have not discharged your responsibilities to the full - the happier you will become.

Give away your wealth today, give it away readily, sacrifice your self-esteem, cleanse yourself of the love of this world and Allah will expand your heart. He shall make you so benevolent that you will have made yourself deserving of the Paradise whose expanse will embrace the heavens and the earth.
